Birmingham Tech Week is a not-for-profit community initiative (CIC) which aims to raise the profile of the Birmingham tech scene, encourage inward investment, inspire the next generation, facilitate collaboration and create an ecosystem where tech companies can flourish.
West Midlands 5G and 5PRING were this year involved in a number of webinars as part of Birmingham Tech Week, this ran from 12th to 16th October 2020. Read more below to find out what we discussed across the week and links to our sessions.
West Midlands 5G (WM5G) are delivering the UK’s first region-wide 5G testbed looking to deliver two objectives:
1) To accelerate the rollout of 5G across the region 2) To test, prove and scale new applications and services.
Together with mobile network operators and all seven local authorities within the West Midlands, we have already helped our region’s towns and cities accelerate access to 5G.
Getting the infrastructure right now will mean businesses and public sector organisations can get involved much sooner, which will help to position the UK as a world leader in 5G technology. To truly harness the revolutionary benefits of 5G, it is vital we get the foundations right and develop a 5G ecosystem that is fit for the future.
During this session, we shared:
— Information from a range of stakeholders in the region why 5G and connectivity is important
— What benefits have already been delivered
— And importantly practical information and advice on how to accelerate the roll-out of 5G
In common with the rest of the UK, the West Midlands needs to reduce pressure on health and care systems, helping citizens to better manage their own health. 5G is a key component; providing the connectivity to deliver care and support away from the clinic and in the community or at home.
During this session we shared:
— Details of trials underway in the region and already delivering benefits
— How by using 5G to spearhead healthcare innovation, the West Midlands is leading the way in improving patient care and transforming healthcare productivity.
1) Existing and future 5G transport trials
West Midlands 5G’s Transport programme consists of a portfolio of projects which have been developed to support new 5G-enabled products and services. The outcome of these projects will make a significant difference to transport across the West Midlands region and have national relevance – supporting the region to take a leading position in digital transport investment. Delegates will receive an overview of these 7 exciting new recently launched projects plus details of a further funding competition for 5G-enabled road and rail trials – a share of up to £2.5 million is available to UK registered businesses.
2) Supporting technical capabilities
Understanding 5G in transport, its potential both in the region and the UK and international context. A debate on the wider opportunities 5G offers and how private and public organisations can engage with the Application Accelerators in the region – 5PRING.
3) Live Q&A session
Find out more about the opportunities to engage with 5G – whether via the trials programme or the different types of engagement offered by the 5PRING accelerator programme. Discuss your new business ideas and/or challenges and learn more about how 5G may help you on your journey.
