WM5G is partnering with the local authorities in the West Midlands to create the conditions for faster 5G roll-out. 5G network rollout requires involvement from a number of departments within each local authority – such as estates, highways, planning, legal and so on.
Each of the local authorities have appointed a Digital Champion and Digital Coordinator to act as a central point for supporting the development and implementation of best practice for planning. WM5G has been working closely with these and other key stakeholders within local authorities to help unblock current planning issues and shape councils’ strategies. To-date we have worked on over 40 infrastructure acceleration initiatives.
In addition, we are creating a common digital map of mobile and fibre coverage plus local authority infrastructure. This map will enable local authorities and the private sector to identify areas with poor mobile coverage more precisely and consider options to address these issues using public assets more easily – subject of course to planning laws.
WM5G will provide a forum to meet, share ideas and good practice. Details of the roles of Digital Champion and Digital Coordinator can be found here >
