5G enabled road and rail transport trials, round two

A second round of the funding competition for 5G enabled road and rail trials is currently underway in partnership with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) and in collaboration with Innovate UK, WM5G will invest up to £2.5 million in innovation projects that develop a new service or product.

The current use case focus is on the specific themes below and be suitable for trial in the West Midlands using the live 5G environment:

  1. Movement of things – Freight and logistics
  2. Movement of people – Public transport recovery and traveller confidence post COVID
  3. Road operation and management – improving congestion and emissions

These projects must improve road and rail operational efficiency, provide better-connected transport, more cohesive travel solutions and transport information, or improve traveller experience.
